Sodium Palmate

What is it?

Sodium palmate is sodium salt, which is naturally derived from the fatty acids in palm oil.

What does it do?

Sodium palmate acts as a surfactant and emulsifying agent and is a key ingredient in our bar soap.

How is it made?

Our Stewardship Model guides us to select ingredients which have been processed in a manner that supports our philosophy of human and environmental health.

Sodium palmate is a result of the saponification reaction of the fatty acids found in palm oil with sodium hydroxide. The palm oil is obtained by extracting oil from the pulp of the fruit of the oil palm plant (Elaeis guineensis). The palm oil used in our bar soap is Rainforest Alliance Certified™, which means it is grown and harvested on farms and forests that follow sustainable practices1.

What are the alternatives?

There are synthetic or animal tallow alternatives to sodium palmate for soap but these do not meet the standards of our Stewardship model for natural, responsible and sustainable.

Is this the right option for me?

Sodium palmate has a long history of safe use in cleansing products.

Tom’s of Maine recognizes that no two people are alike, and even with naturally derived ingredients, some individuals may develop an allergic reaction that is unique to them. As with any product, be sure to discontinue use if you experience discomfort or other indications that the product may not be appropriate for your individual body chemistry.
