Natural Fragrance

What is it?

Our natural world contains so many exciting smells. Rather than use synthetic fragrance components, our philosophy is to use the many fragrant plants that are already present on the Earth. Our products are fragranced with 100% natural ingredients; we use pure plant essential oils, essential oil blends or blends that contain naturally derived plant isolates. We believe creating a pure, natural fragrance experience is worth the extra effort. Our fragrance “building blocks” are obtained by distillation, CO2 extraction, cold pressing, and fermentation; any carriers used (if necessary) must also meet our criteria of being 100% natural. Our natural fragrance carriers include glycerin and coconut oil.

Our Stewardship Model guides us to select ingredients which have been processed in a manner that supports our philosophy of human and environmental health.

What are the alternatives?

Many fragrances are compounded using synthetic aromatic compounds. These compounds are often much less expensive than their natural counterparts. Artificial fragrances are also carried in propylene glycol and butylene glycol. Using 100% natural fragrances is more costly, but it is something we stand behind.

Is this the right option for me?

Plant essential oils contain natural compounds that make them particularly appealing to our sense of smell. These aromatic compounds naturally found in the plants need to be monitored carefully in some cases, though, as allergic reactions in some people may result.

The Scientific Committee on Cosmetic Products (SCCP), a scientific advisor to the European Commission, has identified twenty six fragrance ingredients that most frequently cause skin sensitisation reactions. We carefully analyse each of our fragrances for these twenty six components, making sure we are well below any safety thresholds. We test our finished products to ensure they have low irritation potential and no skin sensitisation as well.

Tom’s of Maine recognises that no two people are alike, and even with pure and natural ingredients and proper formula testing, some individuals may develop an allergic reaction that is unique to them.
